(English) “LET THERE BE “LED”! or should that be “LET THERE BE LIGHT!”
A Whole New Meaning for LED Crystal — The Magical New Year’s Eve Ball of Light in Times Square, New York City
At precisely 11:59pm on December 31st, 2015, hundreds of thousands of people will cheer and shout as they huddle together in Times Square to watch the famous New Year’s Eve Ball dazzle and shimmer as it leads the countdown to midnight. Those Waterford Crystals scintillate the hope and excitement of a bright and shiny 2016 as voices from all over the globe count down in unison…3,2,1 — Happy New Year!
Here’s how this exquisite electric sphere mesmerizes crowds with it’s brilliance each year:
- This is the fifth version of the crystal ball that is 6 feet in diameter, weighs approximately 1,212 pounds or 550kgs and showcases 2,688 crystal shingles that were hand-crafted at the Waterford Crystal manufacturing site in Ireland.
- 32,256 Luxeon Rebel LED globes, assembled by Philips, light up this incandescent polyhedron orb, and yet, it only uses as much electricity as two kitchen stoves.
- These particular LED structures consist of over 8,000 of each colour, red, blue, green and white.
- Apparently, the light structure has a range of 16 million vivacious colours and gazillions of designs.
A large 5 foot iron and wood ball containing more than 100 25w bulbs and weighing in at about 700 pounds was the prototype at the beginning of the 20th century. We’ve come a long way, Baby!
